After spending thousands of dollars over the years building up your wardrobe, it is important that you pay special attention in taking care of your clothes in a similar manner as the attention that you pay to your car.
Most men do not maintain their clothing, as a matter of fact, there are some men that pay more attention to the upkeep of their cars than their clothing, wives, and sometimes even themselves.
There are a number of simple little things that some men fail to pay attention to when it comes to taking care of their clothes, maybe they do not see these things as important or maybe it is a case that they just do not know.
It is best that one initially invest in quality clothing which is more expensive, but would last a lot longer than buying cheaper clothing that would only last a shorter period of time and would generally have to be replaced more often than the expensive clothing.
The same care and attention that you put into your car to maintain it should be given to your clothing, as it looks better if properly maintained and cared for. Taking care of your clothing takes discipline and paying attention to detail.
As the years roll by and the accumulation of all those clothes that were bought throughout the years, and which now have your wardrobe all clog up and have become almost impossible to find anything, because we have a tendency hoard things rather than to give them away.
Well, if you do happen to find yourself in this situation, it would be a good time to do some spring cleaning and start fresh in maintaining and managing your wardrobe properly. Do not over crowd your wardrobe, your clothes need room to breathe and should be spaced at least 1/2 inch between each garment.
Never use wire hangers for your jackets, always use wooden hangers, it is best to invest in a quality coat hanger which has wider shoulders, which would hold the shape of your jacket much better than the average wooden hanger. Avoid using wire hangers for t shirts since the weight will cause them to lose their shape, it is best to fold or roll them for storing.
Most people do not allow their clothes to air and dry after wearing them all day, and would normally hang them in the closet with their dry clothes. This is not a good practice, since it will cause mould and the other clothes to have an odour. It is important to brush your clothes regularly because the dust can ruin them if allowed to build up over a period of time.
It is very important that you rest your clothing and rotate your wardrobe in order that you do not wear the same jacket, shirt or pants twice two days in a row and your shoes in order that they are aired after each wearing.
Most men like to carry a big bulky wallet in their back pocket which wears (breaks down the nap) out the pants and the pockets into holes as well as keys. Objects should be kept out of the pockets and pants should be lined to help protect them from all the wear and tear.
One of the most important aspects of maintaining and caring for your clothes is pressing. Clothes do not look attractive if they are not pressed properly. Always use brown paper or a damp cloth when pressing in order not to scorch or break down the nap of the material.
Shirt sleeves should not have a permanent press seam and the cuffs and collars should be pressed properly. Always use collar stays in your dress shirt collars to make them fit properly and not droopy.
Suits should not be dry cleaned after each wearing and should not be cleaned too often, since the undershirt and shirt would have absorbed any perspiration.
The chemical used in the dry cleaning destroys the clothes. Never wash your suit in a washing machine, because it would break down the all the linings, felt, canvas and hair cloth in the jacket. If wrinkled, you can use a steamer or hang in the shower when taking a hot shower to remove wrinkles.
Always keep your shoes polished and air after each wearing, use shoe trees to keep their shape or stuff with paper.
